President John Dramani Mahama says insults directed at him on TikTok and other social media platforms do not bother him. Speaking at a town hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York, Mahama said he has developed what he described as “crocodile skin” after years in politics, adding that he has been vilified and even voted out of office before. However, Mahama said the wider issue of TikTok, misinformation, disinformation and online insults requires national discussion. He said he is sometimes unaware of arrests involving social media users until he hears about them through the media, and expressed concern when people are reportedly arrested simply for insulting him. Mahama has therefore called for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and other stakeholders to come together for a forum to determine how Ghana should regulate new media and whether the police should be involved in dealing with online content. He said the goal should be to protect free expression while also addressing threats, misinformation and content that could undermine public safety.
