So thinking about this and then looking it up it appears this is closer to a cookie than what we now consider cake. I’m assuming you cream the butter and sugar THEN add the eggs (2 yolks whipped with one egg white) — likely folding in the egg since they are fluffy (??), THEN adding dry ingredients. According to what I looked up it’s to be chilled, which is what some sugar cookie and other cookie recipes recommend. And bake at “moderate temperature” means 350° as that is the typically the standard bake for cookies. What I looked up said these would be served along with wine or champagne bc they would be plain enough to complement what you were drinking but dry enough that they wouldn't crumble while standing at a WH reception. As a baker I’m very interested in trying these so thank you!

I wonder if those cakes would be nicer if made with cardamom. I think these are halfway between a spritz cookie and a ladyfinger. for spritz it's roughly half as much butter as there is flour and since lady fingers don't have butter it should work, in theory.

Great grandma had a daffodil cake which called for 21 chicken egg yolks or 11 goose egg yolks. Was always added yellow/orange food coloring until we used farm fresh eggs. No food coloring needed.
