ugh i'm so mad they gave adam essentially no background. he loved and was yearning for olive for years 😭 and he had a long time best friend who was huge in revealing more about adam and his history and was a catalyst in olive and adam's relationship 😭

Yeah he had more of like a brilliant autistic vibe. Someone without social skills than an evil vibe.

We get his “why he’s a villain” in the book because of his best friend Holden WHO THEY TOOK OUR OF THE MOVIE😭. And they didn’t give us a moment he is in love with her because HE HAS BEEN IN LOVE WITH HER FOR 3 YEARS WHICH THEY ALSO TOOK OUT. Also she is a phd student trying to get a doctorate. He is a post doc teaching the phd students. He’s not on her dissertation board but he is on Malcolm’s who is her best friend. Malcolm is also on Adam’s research team which is how he could fire him.

oh don’t worry as a real-life phd student their whole relationship is very much a gray area. the weirdest part for me is the other faculty seem fine with it?!

Could even have a small montage of him seeing her through the years and him having a crush or something

As a professor, I also did not understand the academic hierarchy in this movie. Fwiw, the hierarchy is accurate to academia in the book. They don’t really interact at all there because he does a different niche of biology than Olive.

This is the most accurate review. Is it a great movie? No. Will I watch it again? 100%. Is it because of the male main character? No. Is it because of Lili Reinhart? 100000000% yes

The thing is, in both the book & fanfic, Adam is just a normal guy!! He has a reputation for being very harsh, strict, and he’s got high expectations for his students, but he’s not “Dr Evil”. He just cares a lot about his work & he’s kinda quiet? They made him into such a bad caricature or parody of Kylo Ren.

I wish it was a series instead of a movie, as a lover of the book and everything Ali Hazelwood it was cute but not nearly enough

He’s not a villain at all, and I’m so bummed that the movie left out his backstory so that you think that. He is an imperfect man with a lot of history trying to be the best man he can be while ensuring that every student he oversees is the very best they can be. He has loved Olive for years, and is a huge champion of her work.

I just thought his character was meant to be very blunt and, while not unaware that people thought he was awful, he believed that the truth(even in its harshest form) was better than softening things or giving chances where they may not be earned. He wasn’t wrong about any of his firing decisions; the roommate hated that field and was objectively bad at his position, Mountain Dew is going to reoffend, dead dog girl probably did do much better and is better off(rip doggy) because of his criticism. He isn’t malicious or cruel like his professor , he’s just brutally honest and socially awkward. Because of his horrible experience, he probably just thinks “these people have no idea what ‘evil’ looks like” and so he doesn’t give much thought to it. Idk I thought it was actually kind of interesting

i love the book but I did not like adam in the movie😭 also everyone is talking about how funny it is that tom bateman is playing adam, but I think it’s a little odd bc he inspired tom benton, the character who sexually harassed olive, aka his wife
