Because the money doesn’t actually go to the student, it’s paid directly to the university. Also not everyone takes 20-30 years to payback student loans. Only those who choose to make minimum payments do. My daughter graduated from Clemson then did a year at NYU and paid off her student loans in 8 years

because no one can get out of the loan contract & the banks know that they can garnish checks for life, so they'll get it back one way or another.

a person who pays $1500 a month for rent doesn't qualify for an $800 a month mortgage because they don't think you can make your payment 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

They will only make those loans if the parents co-sign. Parent plus loan

Aren’t most student loans backed by parents? I thought students could only get $5000 on their own?

It's one of the few loans that someone can get that they cannot declare bankruptcy on and have it scrubbed. So technically, they will always have to pay it back. No matter what.

because you can't go bankrupt on student loans. they will take it out of your check. imagine if you couldn't go bankrupt on a home. if it was destroyed somehow you still needed to pay the full amount. even if you couldn't live there.

Obama took over student loan lending in 2010 so colleges raised prices, opened the doors to everyone and passed out diploma mill degrees in hobbies.

so what most dont seem to realize it but that loan is federally backed. a lot of mortgages are backed by the government but they are bundled up and sold. if the government didn't back the student loan no one would be going to college. because no one would be able to get the loan to do it.

banks won't loan that same amount for equipment that will start showing an immediate return on the investment either... even tho they could repo it if payments aren't made. They want to keep you in debt for life.. and if you have a home morgage, the bank owns the home but you pay the taxes on it... Bottom line is... the banks are running the show.

Ok so student loans and, loans for a house work differently and they are evaluated differently, while a house loan is evaluated on your actual income and your ability to pay the debt in full with interest while also calculating the amount of money you need for basic necessities, student loans run more on the possibility of a person to actually work in the career they are studying for, meaning the federal government requires this in order to create doctor's lawyers etc. if you want my direct thought its easier to convince a kid to pay all his life then an adult to pay back something he cant afford. so in short terms the federal government makes it an obligation to banks to actually approve student loans based on their potential and grades and choices in a career as in investment in the country. so yes people umm make it the federal governments problem to afford housing

Not the way it works anymore. The parent applies and is on the hook. College, for most part, is a scam.
