I believe it’s because when the cara was created it was to represent horses fighting the bit when they were exited and rushing into war, I’m not 100% sure if this is correct but this is how I’ve been told

well, carousels were invented in the 6th century by the Byzantine empire, so it makes sense for traditional carousels to match old art. they were also meant to be galloping into war, hence the facial expressions. yes it is harsh. they also didnt have the technology and information we have today. horses WERE tools. they were everywhere, and they were used in harsh ways by harsh people.

they’re supposed to represent war horses! they’re charging into battle! it’s just a more dynamic pose and more interesting to look at, so of course artists are going to choose this over a more static pose.

If I remember it was just an artistic choice to make them more expressive, OR it was to recreate their excitement going into war

a lot of statues do this because it makes it more interesting to look at. Im sure its part of the reasons that carousels also do it!

it's more artistic also it would be quite boring if all the horses had the same face (because calm horses never really have much difference to their faces) the horses are supposed to be charging into war. wish my problems were this small

As a carousel enthusiast: There’s actually a historical and artistic reason for it. But I doubt anyone is actually wanting to know it.
