I’m not an expert. But I think you would stain it first, then put polyurethane on them.

please make sure to put the rollers and towels that touched the stain in a metal container. they can catch fire super easily and ive seen many homes/garages burn down because of that!

Well hun either your not going to stain them at all or you are just applying clear polyurethane to the wood to create a cleaner natural color.
