@finance.bird: Is buying an electric vehicle cost-effective? Not really. The cost of EV rarely offsets the price of fuel. There are exceptions to this. if your vehicle is very large and gets mileage in the single digits, then yes, EV would benefit you. However, if you are planning to charge your electric car at public charging stations, those are almost as expensive as gasoline . ##financebird##furry##PersonalFinance##Budgeting##cars
I absolutely love getting 60 mpg in my 2016 Toyota Prius. Prius’s are super cheap to insure too.

License electrician here, a lot of people don’t realize that if you want a car charger in your home your either get a LV1 that charges you car fully in about 30hrs of being plugged in and if you want to upgrade, most homes have a 100Amp-125amp service (most common service in homes) that’s already maxing out especially if you use mostly electric appliances and the only way to fix that is to get a service upgrade that would cost anywhere from 5k to 10k, depends on the home

Yeah, I disagree with this take a thousand percent. The only time it's dumb to buy an EV is if you have a fully paid off car or nearly paid off car and you want to save gas money. But if you're in the market for a new car, for whatever reason, you want one, you need one, whatever it is. EVs will always save more money in the long run.

Get a 2025 or 2026 Toyota Camry. Got mine brand new for $23,000. Full tank will last me 500 miles, more if I drive like a grandpa but filling up is only about ~$40! (California, $5.80/gal)

So I disagree with hybrids in the long run. They have a much smaller battery which leads to much higher number of charge cycles. You also have to maintain both the battery and gas sides of the vehicle which leads to higher long term repair bills.

I always agree with you. But this one id personally recommend an ev if and only if they had a place to charge it say a garage. I was spending 700-1000 a month on my little Tacoma for fuel @3.50$ weighted average a gal and 6500 a year was average maintenance expense. My Tesla? That I got for cheaper than the Tacoma has an insurance cost less than half of my Tacoma, my fuel cost is right around 50$ a month, and my maintenance so far over a year is roughly 450$. If they rarely drive sure an old cheap used car but if their concern is fuel pricing it’s indicative they drive or idle a lot. So, an ev would be incredible here especially for IRS standard mileage.

The convenience of the EV is being able to charge at home, always having a full tank of “gas”, and never having to stop at gas stations

Who buys a vehicle, gas or EV, so that they can “recoup the cost”? Most people aren’t businesses. Every car immediately depreciates the moment you drive off the lot.

Agreed. It’s not really about the economics. It’s better for the environment to charge a car with power that’s being generated from much more efficient sources. A dual cycle natural gas plant gets almost 60% thermal efficiency on fuel. You’re never going to get that with a piston engine pushing a car around. The other thing is power plants are under more scrutiny and regulations regarding waste than automotive fuel. For reference the thermal efficiency of a gasoline engine is 35-40% so we are burning 20-25% more fuel per watt of energy generated driving gas cars.

I dont really agree with this too much. I quoted many auto insurence companies for a model y and rav4 hybrid and got back practically the same price. I get thats not the case for everyone in every state but you should check and run the numbers before writing it off

You, me, and the rest of the EV drivers also think it's pretty ridiculous that states are tacking on extra fees just to make up for gas cars!

this also is a mindset for buying an EV without a NEED of getting a new (to you) car. if your current car dies and you need to replace it, if you're looking for your first car, if you're in a totaled car and given a check by insurance, the math changes. There's plenty of good EVs like that Kia, or Nissan Leaf. people drive a lot less than they think they do and EVs and range are not the boogie man they think it is

I also think it wouldn't make sense to finance an EV if you have a paid off gas vehicle
typically people are paying ~40/week on a 4 banger
