A possibly drunk person was at Cooper’s Hawk on 3710 E Main Street. The restaurant manager said a very drunk woman had just left. She drove off in a gray GMC Sierra, heading west on E Main Street. Officer Wessendorf spotted a matching GMC Sierra on E Main near Cedar Avenue. He swung around with a U-turn. He pulled up close by the Main Street Bridge. The truck turned north onto N 2nd Street. It veered right into the center lane. He saw it swerve. Lights flashed on. Time for a stop. The driver pulled into Salerno’s lot at 320 N 2nd Street. Officer Wessendorf stepped out. He met the driver, Crystal Marie Kjellsvik. She first said she came from Geneva. Then she admitted it was Cooper’s Hawk in St. Charles. While talking, he smelled alcohol. Her words slurred. Crystal owned up to three glasses of wine. But her restaurant check showed six. To check if she was too drunk to drive, he had her try the alphabet. Start at D, end at W. She messed it up. Then count back from 68 to 53. She went right past 53. Next, out of the truck for sobriety tests. First came the eye test, Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. No smooth tracking. Jerky eyes at the end. Jerking started too soon, before 45 degrees. Walk-and-turn test followed. No heel-to-toe steps. Bad turn. Wrong step count. Last was one-leg stand. She didn't lift her foot right. Dropped it too soon. The manager's tip, wild driving, booze smell, her admission, failed tests. Officer Wessendorf arrested her for DUI. Cuffs on. Into the patrol car. Off to the St. Charles Police Department. There, Crystal skipped the breath test. Processing done. A friend took her home. Court date set.
