I read recently that as humans, we don’t grieve well. We also don’t call grief for what it is and understand how it impacts secondary emotions as well. I’ve been catching myself lately wading into those secondary emotions. Short tempered with what’s in front of me right now… usually it’s dissatisfaction with lack of control. Down and discouraged… usually struggling to process a deeper level of jealousy or wishing “hard” wasn’t so “hard” sometimes. Taking something personal or feeling offended by someone’s actions or words… usually putting people on the throne of my life instead of God. I’ve been telling myself, “This is a secondary emotion to the grief I am avoiding.” I can hang out there and continue to dwell on grief and fear and worry. I can get short tempered. I can sever relationships. I can spiral. I can lash out. Or or or, I can say, “This is a secondary emotion. So it’s a choice.” And at the end of the day, it’s a choice we all get. We ALL face our own version of “hard.” Some of us fight back, some of us shut down, some of us shut out, some of us grow self-centered, some of us bitter. But the rare… the tiny fraction of humans who walk a heavy road, and choose… CHOOSE joy anyway? Even when and even if it’s hard, they are the ones who change the lives of others. “They held joy for others, despite what was handed to them.” And I don’t know. Maybe the hard thing you have to do today, we have to do today, all of us needs to do today is be holders of joy. Palms up, right? How else will we receive the blessings if our fists are always clenched? #buildforbeddy #schwartzjampelsyndrome #rarediseaseawareness
