Carolyn Henry :
I actually believe the 50% stake that Royal Caribbean is acquiring in Sandals could be a very good thing for both industries, if the partnership is executed properly.
Think about the possibilities.
For Royal Caribbean, this gives its cruise passengers access to something it has never really had at this scale: land-based, all-inclusive resorts. Yes, Royal Caribbean already has CocoCay in The Bahamas, but Sandals gives the company access to an established resort network and a completely different hospitality experience.
Imagine someone taking a Royal Caribbean cruise and, instead of simply spending a few hours in a port, having the option to extend the experience by staying at a Sandals resort for several days. Cruise, resort, cruise. You could essentially combine the two products into one vacation experience.
And it works the other way too.
There are people who have never been interested in cruising but absolutely love the Sandals experience. Royal Caribbean now has an opportunity to introduce those customers to cruising. Likewise, loyal cruise passengers now have another reason to explore Sandals resorts.
From a business perspective, that's cross-selling and diversification.
For Sandals, the partnership also brings significant financial muscle. A roughly US$3 billion investment gives the company additional resources to expand, enter new markets, invest in its properties, develop new concepts and potentially explore opportunities beyond the traditional hotel model.
And let's not underestimate the value of having a global brand like Royal Caribbean sitting alongside Sandals.
Royal Caribbean brings international reach, cruise expertise, technology, marketing power and access to a massive customer base. Sandals brings decades of expertise in Caribbean hospitality, luxury all-inclusive resorts and destination management.
So I'm not looking at this simply as Royal Caribbean buying into Sandals.
I'm looking at it as two major players in Caribbean tourism potentially creating a much bigger vacation ecosystem.
The real question now is what they will do with the opportunity.
Will we eventually see cruise-and-resort packages? More integration between cruise it
