I'm still confused after I visited a new girl that started in my 4th grade class 35 years ago. Her mother had made spaghetti for dinner. Plain spaghetti and nothing else. She put the pot with the spaghetti on the table and then she poured sugar over it and loaded it on to our plates. It was just so disgusting, but I was too shy to say anything so I just ate it and tried not to notice the taste. Then she said: "it's good right?? We eat this pretty much every day!". I still don't know if I was pranked, but I didn't go over there for dinner again 😂

As a girl from Yorkshire I can safely say that I’ve never heard of putting sugar in mashed potatoes. It sounds a little bit obscene to me. My mashed potatoes contain salt butter, and a dash of cream no freaking sugar.

Nah, if they were all Canadian, they wouldn't have put OP in the hot seat for not liking it. They would probably just say "That's okay, don't worry" or even offer something else, because they felt sorry they cooked something their guest didn't like. Sorry, I'm not even Canadian, but why would I make a fuss about someone not liking a certain dish? Everyone's taste differs and that's okay.
