I would sit back and literally say 'just let me know when it's my turn to speak'

honestly i do this all the time. just let people talk themselves out. if they're angry they'll get tired, but its also a good way to just interact imo. people will talk when given the space. they usually want to be heard, not given solutions.

Ah yeah, had a lady on the phone complain because she forgot to download a file that expired 6 months prior. It was in the paperwork stating that after she had purchased it, when she called and I told her the protocol, and was being nice enough to offer a refund, she still tried tearing into me and saying “you need to learn to do your job” so I paused until she asked if I was still there, I said “yes, I’m just waiting for you to teach me how to do my job.” And that immediately shut her up.

I had a customer who wanted us to fix stuff for free because he didn’t know what he was doing. We offered training that he would have to pay for. He would say “I know everything and I want you to fix it as free support” I effectively said No, pay for training or pay for a consultant. No amount of aggression worked for him

It’s the customer-service version of grey rocking. I’m sad that it took me several years of customer service before I finally figured it out

Yep. Throw a wet blanket over it. They're coming to you for something. You're always in control.

💯% accurate. I just let them rant until they get uncomfortable by my silence.

And 10/10, they realize there’s no issue- they just want what they can’t have. My favorite thing to say once they finally quiet down was “are you done?”

I have that mama/ teacher voice that, while still very nice, still carries the ‘if you don’t calm your little a**down…’ it works🤷🏻‍♀️my husband and daughter laugh at how I ‘gentle parent’ my difficult callers.

When taking escalations with an interrupter, I speak very softly, forcing them to quiet down and listen.

I've taught my trainees that when someone calls pissed off, let them get it all out. do not say ANYTHING until they are done, THEN fix their problem.

people would ask how do you deal with yelling customers I'd point to the volume button much more manageable

Yep. Whether it was in the training or not, you learn real quick that going "Sir- Sir let me- Sir" isn't gonna get you anywhere. So just mute yourself, lower the volume, and enjoy your mandatory break. You will always have one 20 minute call, it's inevitable.

When I did call center stuff I found the disengage method was the best as well. Pull my phone out and scroll Reddit while they yell and tucker themselves out
