But have you ever wondered who decides where the lanes go, how long a turn lane should be, or how long a traffic light stays green? Roads aren’t simply paved and marked with lines. Engineers consider traffic volume, vehicle speed, pedestrian movement, turning patterns, intersection geometry, and safety when designing them. At an intersection, vehicles and pedestrians moving in different directions must share the same space without colliding. That’s why the sequence and timing of traffic signals matter so much. Change the timing of one signal, and traffic flow can change. Change the length of a turning lane, and congestion can spread into the lanes behind it. Even crosswalks, stop lines, lane markings, and turning paths are placed according to specific design and safety considerations. What looks like an ordinary intersection is actually a carefully coordinated system designed to keep thousands of movements organized.
