Ako, di na nag-asawa. I chose my niece over anything else.
I was already there when she was little, and I was the one who first discovered that she was on the autism spectrum. From that moment, I knew my life would be different. I chose to stay, to learn, to understand, and to be there for her, no matter how difficult the journey became.
There were nights when I cried quietly and wondered, "Did I make the right choice?” I’ve been tired, exhausted, and broken more times than I can count. There were days when I felt like I had nothing left in me.
But then she would come and hug me.
Just one little hug, her simple way of saying, Thank you.
And somehow, the exhaustion disappears.
The early mornings I spend preparing her breakfast become something I look forward to. Every book, every article, every new thing I learn about autism becomes my strength, because I know that understanding her better means being able to help her better.
It hasn’t been an easy life. It has been a roller coaster of tears, fears, sacrifices, and little victories.
But I would choose her again, and again, and again.
My only dream is to see the day when she can stand on her own, live independently, and face the world without needing me beside her every step of the way.
And when that day finally comes, maybe I can finally say, i can rest now. Not because I’m tired of loving her. But because I’ll know that I gave everything I had, and that I helped prepare her for a life she can live on her own.
Until that day comes, I will keep choosing her.
Because sometimes, the greatest love story isn't about finding someone to spend your life with.
Sometimes, it's about giving your life to someone you love, and never regretting it. ❤️Today she just turned 12.
