I LOVE my defensive withdrawal. It has genuinely protected me so much

My biggest issue. I hate it bc I try to stop myself from doing it. When someone I love makes me feel unsafe I can feel the flip of the switch happen and it makes me cry bc I can’t stop it. After that happens nothing feels authentic and I don’t want to invest in a relationship that isn’t authentic. I have lost so many friendships and relationships with loved ones over this. But me being safe is most important to me.

Is this the switch in my head that makes me stop caring about people? Like they do something one too many times and I just—completely shut down and don’t care anymore? I don’t choose it and it’s not hard and I don’t realize it’s happened until after it does and I can’t UNDO it

Is this where someone becomes perceived threat and I just stop caring or trusting them?

wait wait so is this the thing where someone just raising their voice makes me shut down and my mind go blank? or when someone hurts me so badly that I go numb?

Have been completely isolated for over 2years and can’t even function in society anymore. Just do my work and go hiking alone. It’s monotonous lifestyle but it’s at least safe and peaceful

Nobody believes me when I tell them this because I'm such a people pleaser but it actually scares me how fast I can forget someone ever existed

The worst part about this is being fully self-aware when it starts and still not being able to stop it from happening or continuing. Even afterward when I realize I’ve shut down I still can’t bring myself to stop being defensive even if I know I’m in the wrong.

Mind you, I’ve gotten past it as a default. But if I sit with it and I recognize that there’s no going back, this makes it super fucking easy to move forward. If I don’t feel safe, there truly isn’t a point. I’ve already tried it.

Is this that thing where when something kinda mildly disappoints me, I just isolate or like cut off all my friends….
