What did the Lucy Letby inquiry uncover? Two babies murdered by Lucy Letby would have survived and five others would not have been attacked if senior hospital staff had acted on warnings of deliberate harm, a landmark inquiry has found. A third baby killed by the nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire might also have survived and two others might not have been attacked, the Thirlwall inquiry found. It concluded that the interests of nurses were put above the safety of babies at the hospital. It also found that the hospital’s former chief executive, Tony Chambers, conducted an “exercise in spin” by concealing concerns regarding Letby from the hospital board and that hospital executives used the risk of upsetting parents as “convenient arguments to justify the decision not to bring in the police”. The 822-page report by Lady Justice Kathryn Thirlwall, a senior Court of Appeal judge, found the “prevention of reputational damage was prized more highly” than investigating the cause of an increase in deaths on the neonatal ward 🔗 Tap the link in bio to read more
