Don’t stomp your little last-season Prada shoes at Broadway this year, honey. The M.O. this season: trap five A-list actors in a living room, add decades of family trauma and weaponize their character flaws. Kicking off the season with @Other Desert Cities , starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus in her Broadway debut, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery making his Broadway debut, and Lily Rabe. Seriously, how much more spoiled can theatre fans get this season? Spoiler: a LOT. If you’re new to Broadway, stay tuned. This season hasn’t even begun flexing yet. The setup: a daughter comes home for Christmas with a memoir exposing a long-buried family secret. Mom and Dad are horrified. AA Auntie has opinions. Brother is trapped in the middle. Basically, nothing says Happy Holidays like publishing your family’s shame and trauma, then bringing advance copies home for Christmas. And these ACTORS. Julia. Ed. Allison. Lily. Joe. At some point you stop watching the play and start thinking, how the hell are all these people on the same stage at the same time? The acting is so ridiculously good I couldn’t hold my $hit together, which frankly seems appropriate for a play about a family that also cannot hold its $hit together. And because apparently my curtain-call obsession now requires its own production budget, there is so much talent taking a bow that I had to juggle TWO cameras just to capture everyone. One camera simply could not contain this cast. I have officially become IMAX for bows. Broadway, if this is how we’re STARTING the season, we’re in trouble. The fabulous kind. And welcome to Broadway, Julia and Joe. Not exactly easing into it, are we? ___________ #theatre #musicals #theaterkids #musicaltheatre #joekeery
