@onthisdaythishappenedtok: Born around 1474 in Yaguana (modern-day Léogâne, Haiti), Anacaona was a high-ranking noblewoman of the indigenous Taíno civilization that inhabited the Caribbean island of Quisqueya, later named Hispaniola by European colonizers. Her name translated in the Taíno language to "Golden Flower," celebrating her grace, intelligence, and artistic talent. She was an accomplished composer of areítos, the sacred poetic ballads and ceremonial dance songs central to preserving Taíno religious traditions, genealogical records, and collective memory. Anacaona held supreme political standing. She was the sister of Bohechío, the ruler of the southwestern cacicazgo of Jaragua, the cultural heart of the island. Her influence widened through her marriage to Caonabo, the formidable cacique of the neighboring mountainous chiefdom of Maguana. Following Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1492 and the establishment of Spanish garrisons, Caonabo led early armed resistance against foreign encroachment. In 1495, Caonabo was captured by Spanish forces and placed on a vessel bound for Spain; the ship sank during a hurricane, taking his life. Rather than yielding to despair, Anacaona returned to Jaragua to assist her brother Bohechío in governing. Unlike other regions consumed by immediate armed clashes, Jaragua initially pursued pragmatic diplomacy. When Bartholomew Columbus visited the region in 1496, Anacaona and Bohechío welcomed him with elaborate celebrations, offering cotton and food as tribute to preserve their people's autonomy. Following Bohechío's death around 1500, Anacaona assumed supreme authority as cacica, governing Jaragua with undisputed prestige and commanding the loyalty of dozens of subordinate regional chiefs. The fragile peace shattered in the autumn of 1503 with the arrival of the island's new Spanish governor, Nicolás de Ovando. Leading an army of over three hundred infantry and seventy armored cavalry, Ovando claimed he was arriving for a friendly inspection. Anacaona prepared a magnificent reception to honor the governor, organizing days of theatrical games, music, and banquets attended by eighty subordinate chiefs. During the festivities, Ovando gave a prearranged signal. Spanish cavalry charged through the settlement while armed soldiers surrounded the great wooden meeting hall where the assembled Taíno nobility were gathered. The Spanish locked the doors and set the structure ablaze, burning the captured chiefs alive inside while soldiers slaughtered unarmed civilians in the streets. Anacaona was spared the fire only to be bound in chains and taken to Santo Domingo. Subjected to a mock trial for treason against the Spanish Crown, she was offered a pardon if she agreed to become a concubine to Spanish officials. She flatly refused to compromise her dignity or betray her people. In late 1503, at approximately twenty-nine years of age, Anacaona was executed by public hanging. Today, she is honored throughout Haiti and the Dominican Republic as an iconic founding mother, artist, and martyr of anti-colonial resistance. #anacaona #historytok #History #HistoryTime #WomenInHistory
