Any time I hear a story Shirley Temple tells, it’s horrifying. [Crying]

As a kid I watched some of those early Shirley Temple movies and said to my mom. Her shirt is too short. You could see her underwear. My mom said oh she is just a baby nobody thought of that back then but I was grossed out.

she at 4 had more heart and compassion than any of the adults on and off set. And unfortunately this is probably not even the worst 😕

It was the Depression. My father was her age and has told me many stories. I’d say the reason many people put their children through this is because it was that or starve. If you’ve ever read The Grapes of Wrath, the ending shows just how desperate people were to eat. The rich and corrupt always target the marginalized for profit.

Shirley Temple was a very vocal civil rights activist who campaigned for the rights of Black people for decades. And it started because of her friendship with Bojangles Robinson, a famous Black tapdancer whose dancing inspired people like Gene Kelly. Bojangles and Shirley danced the FIRST EVER interracial dance on television when she was a young child and he was already quite old. He was very kind to her and she was upset when they traveled together and he had to stay in segregated lodging. She grew up abused herself (SA and all) and yet focused on the abuse of Black people and worked hard to combat it. A wonderful person.

Old Hollywood stories about kids is kist telling how they were tortured. The punishment when they didn’t know lines is… That and most the parents stole the money!

the way they treated not only these children but especially Shirley throughout her "career" there just has to be a so special place in the 9th circle for those creeps

At least she always stood on business with this from what I've heard. Like when she took the hand of the jazz dancer to do their stairs scene.

i remember hearing a story about how they made Shirley and the other children sit on a block of ice if they were misbehaving -- "misbehaving" meaning just being kids, basically.

OMG, that's evil. Several years ago I heard her account of how they used to treat her on set, which was locking her inside a dark windowless box with a block of ice in it for missing her cue or not being vibrant enough in the scene. So there is no doubt about the evil. If that's how they treated their star, they must've been truly vile to these kids.

I looked like Shirley temple growing up. Strawberry blonde curly hair that coiled with blue eyes. Every time I left the house between the ages of 2-9 people old people would grope me and touch me without my permission. Every time I was in line at the grocery store old men would come up behind me and touch my hair and rub my back. One woman even asked me to cut off a loc of my hair so she could frame it. A man followed me around Claire's in a mall, my mom noticed and dragged me out, he kept following me and only stopped after we went through a crowd and he couldn't see me anymore. I hated Shirley temple growing up due to how people would compare me to her and then touch me. I now have agoraphobia due to all of the things I went through. The exploitation of Shirley temple still impacts young girls today

Why none of the parents said anything was unfortunately probably due to the Great Depression with many of the children probably being the breadwinners or largely contributing to their families income. Being easy going on set increases the chances of being booked another gig. With bread around that time being like 8 cents, ten dollars could feed a family a while. It was also just over double the average daily wage. This DOES NOT justify anything that was enabled on sets however as these children should not have been put through the stuff they had been.

The answer to why would parents allow their children to be in this kind of situation is always the same, money.
