I went to the atomic bomb museum in Hiroshima. A bit of distance away across a small canal is a building preserved exactly how it looked the day of the bomb, a burned out husk. I sat down and started to sketch it (I was an art student) and while I did some schoolgirls came up with their teacher to interview an American. They were extremely sweet and the two little girls who interviewed me gave me their business cards (they were written in pencil, laminated and had stickers on them). Talking to them in front of those ruins was surreal. The museum is extremely diplomatic, it does not blame the US for the bomb but instead blames the war in general. I thought it was odd but after the interview I started to get it. There’s no individuality in waging a war, “America dropped the bomb”, “Japan devastated Nanking”. Suffering happens personally, the small stories of people like Michichiko Hachiya or the survivor testimonials that play in the museum. The stories of heroism from victims in the Holocaust. We kill as a country and die as an individual, because we want to place the blame on a nebulous collective to hide our part in it. The logical conclusion of that train of logic is to expand the blame further from nations to the war itself. Outside of the act of starting the war, every tragedy is can be considered crafted from existing within it. If instead of blaming the war you blame the country and individual you have to question your own complicity in why you allow yourself to be led by monsters. I still have those business cards.

You have to remember the Japanese literally believed that their emperor was a god. They were taught from birth that he was their god. The only reason they surrendered was because the emperor finally gave up.

in the 50s there was an American TV show that was interviewing a person who lived through the bombing, lost everyone but they lived. while interviewing him the host said they would like to bring out another guest: one of the pilots who was flying Enola Gay... this episode is up on YouTube- idk what the show was called. the pilot talked about the events so coldly and precisely... the Japanese man was visibly shaking. it's so messed up. imagine losing your entire world/life bc of another group of people and years later you meet one of those people and they dont feel bad or seem to care? the pilot just talks about the event like it was just another Tuesday

The fact that people escaped to another town and then another bomb dropped. [Crying] It’s so sad. Japan was terrible to China and should have been punished but man these folks were completely innocent.

Bro that’s actually crazy how nobody knew what high amounts of radiation could do to the human body, not just humans but plant like and wild life. It was to stop the war but it’s horrific that it had to come to that.
