LINDSAY CLANCY TRIAL — DAY 13 What is the prosecution even doing? I say this as someone who believes Lindsay Clancy should be held responsible for killing her children: I am becoming increasingly confused by the case the prosecution is presenting. This morning, Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Kyle Pavao testified about data recovered from a computer seized from the Clancy home. The prosecution highlighted a “suicide methods” webpage accessed in August 2022 — about five months before the killings. They also brought up searches involving musician Tom Hall, one of his songs, information about his death by suicide, and a page referencing jumping from the Grafton Bridge. (CT Insider) It sounds significant until cross-examination. The witness acknowledged: He could not tell who was actually using the computer. He did not know Patrick Clancy was reportedly a Tom Hall fan who played guitar. And the Tom Hall activity they were discussing dated back to August 2022. (CT Insider) That led to essentially the same question I was asking while watching: That’s it? That’s why this witness is here? Later, State Police Trooper Timothy Chiappini testified about Lindsay’s actual cellphone. That evidence was at least directly connected to her device. Her phone showed a January 20 search for “can you treat a sociopath?” It also contained the restaurant and CVS searches and text messages from January 24 that help establish the timeline of Patrick leaving the house. (CT Insider) But then the prosecution also introduced a note from Lindsay’s phone where she wrote about wanting to be a better mother, wanting Callan to feel loved, wanting to feel happy again, and being terrified something might happen to her children. (CT Insider) And once again I’m left asking: What exactly is the prosecution’s theory? Are they trying to establish suicide planning? Premeditation? A motive for killing the children? That Lindsay was manipulative? Because after 13 days of testimony, I still don’t feel like they have clearly connected those dots. Meanwhile, the defense has a very simple explanation for the jury: Lindsay was mentally ill, psychotic, heard command hallucinations and was not criminally responsible. I am NOT saying I believe they have proven that. I’m still waiting for convincing evidence that Lindsay was psychotic at the exact time she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan. But the prosecution has to give the jury something stronger than scattered Facebook comments, parenting frustrations, ambiguous computer searches from five months earlier and evidence they cannot even attribute to Lindsay. They say these killings were deliberate and premeditated. Then show us the evidence that proves that. Give us a coherent theory of motive. Show us what proves intent. And most importantly, show us why the defense’s explanation of psychosis is wrong. Because right now? I’m on the prosecution’s side — and I think they are making their own case harder than it needs to be.
