There’s something uniquely frustrating about somebody giving you the entire relationship experience and then acting confused about why you developed relationship feelings. To be fair, somebody can genuinely like you and still realize they aren’t ready or don’t want a relationship. Dating is partly about discovering compatibility, and feelings don’t obligate somebody to commit. But there’s a difference between honestly figuring things out along the way and knowingly accepting all the emotional benefits of a relationship while keeping the other person in permanent ambiguity. If you know somebody is becoming attached to you and you already know you aren’t willing to offer what they’re hoping for, clarity becomes a form of kindness. Don’t keep escalating the intimacy while quietly maintaining an escape hatch you plan to reveal later. And if you’re on the receiving end of this, one of the hardest lessons is that relationship behavior isn’t always a promise of a relationship. That’s why the uncomfortable conversation sometimes needs to happen before you’re emotionally six months ahead of whatever has actually been agreed upon. What are you looking for? Are we dating toward something? Are you seeing other people? Those questions might feel awkward, but they’re considerably less painful than discovering you’ve been someone’s unofficial girlfriend while they considered themselves completely single. You weren’t foolish for becoming attached to someone who consistently behaved like they were attached to you too. But once they tell you they aren’t ready, believe the part that gives you actual information. Don’t audition harder for the position. Don’t become even more understanding hoping they’ll eventually promote you from situationship to relationship. If somebody wants all the freedom of being single, they’re allowed to have it. They just don’t automatically get all the benefits of having you too.
