Bryan Sperry was 17 years old when he left home to play college football at Kansas State. By 19, football had been replaced by something much bigger: World War II. Sperry was drafted into the Army, sent to Europe and served as an infantryman in the Battle of the Bulge. He eventually made it home, returned to college football and played for the Kansas Jayhawks from 1946 to 1948, even appearing in the Orange Bowl. Then, nearly 70 years after his playing days were over, Kansas gave him one more chance to put on a uniform. At 89 years old, Sperry suited up for a 2015 alumni game, took the ball on the final play and, surrounded by former Jayhawks helping clear the way, ran nearly 40 yards into the end zone. Imagine everything that happened between the first time that young man put on a college football uniform and the last time he crossed a goal line: leaving school, going to war, fighting in one of the most consequential battles of WWII, coming home, finishing college and building an entire life. And there he was at 89, carrying a football toward the end zone one more time with a stadium cheering him on. Sometimes sports give us a moment that is about so much more than sports. Bryan Sperry got his final touchdown, and after the life he lived, I’d say he earned every last yard. 🇺🇸 #CollegeFootball #WWII #KansasFootball #AmericanHistory
