It never occurred to me I’d hear the words “life flight” in discussing MY #kid. I never thought I’d chlorhexidine prep my own son on the same floor I visited as a baby #nursing student 15 years ago. I remember thinking, “if I ever have babies, I couldn’t handle them being here. I don’t know how parents do it.” I remember walking by the “children’s oncology” doors sobbing. I remember seeing the hand-sewn pillows and free stuffies thinking “never. Please, God, never.” Yet, here we are. I sat in silence nearly the entire #ambulance ride save for the moments I helped maintain the various lines draped delicately across my son. I never thought I’d run the pump on my kid. I never thought I’d hook up leads to MY baby’s chest. I never thought a #child of mine would abscess and become septic from a ruptured #appendix EXACTLY like his mother did 23 years ago. The hospital is #beautiful. The night shift staff were amazing. I can tell the day shift will be different and I’m already wishing I didn’t know as much as I do. I just keep thinking about the oncology doors and how grateful I am that my boy’s problem is a relatively easy fix. I know I’ll get him back. I know he’ll be okay. I know there are parents who envy this situation wishing in broken bitterness that it was my kid instead of theirs. Some left this hospital without their babies as we rolled in and we slept by ours. This must be #life’s way of refocusing me on what’s important. I knew better. I was so set on trying to resist my instincts and “push through” I crashed through the other side and fell miserably down the abyss. Nothing is as important as family. Not school, not work, not ignorance, nor pride. I will never make my child suffer again worrying “I’ll be THAT mom.” I hope we change judgmental healthcare culture that encourages us to hurt our babies for fear of being “that mom.” I’m ashamed of thinking protecting my son’s sensory needs and preventing exposure was more important than saving his life. I thought I was doing the right thing. I was so, horribly wrong. I love you so much, Aiden. 🥺💔😭
