I agree that the economy is crazy now days, but back then they didn’t have outrages phone bills, tv subscriptions, coffee outtings, and car loans. You really don’t see how much you can save till you live on the bare minimum. You only need a roof over your head, food on the table, and clothes. People now days live wayyy outside their means

My business went down in 2025 and i ended up working at walmart for a few months. I worked at walmart 15 years ago. I got 2$ more than 15 years ago. The same apartment i lived in then was $600 and is now 1700. Stop telling people to just stop going to for coffee.

If a software engineer and a nurse cannot buy a house like that with their combined salaries, I would guess that they probably have quite a few other debts already that put their total monthly payments over the threshold that the mortgage company will allow.

Everyone in the comments buying houses needs to realize that the housing market is different in other parts of the country. I own a house in Texas in a two salary family. Just because that’s my reality doesn’t mean it’s the same for people in Connecticut or California. Also I’m assuming a lot of people got help from parents or inherited wealth. My parents helped with my downpayment. It being different for you doesn’t automatically make everyone else’s experiences false. Have a little empathy.

a “starter home” in my area is still like 400k so my wife and i despite both being college educated, having good jobs, and eliminating all frivolous expenses are still renting and unable to save anywhere near enough for a down payment. and before you say “MoVe tO aNothEr sTaTe 🤓” i am not moving away from my elderly grandmother and disabled mom.

I was a single mother raising two son in the 90’s and managed to pay rent, food, utilities, all on my own. Now at 60 I cannot afford to live alone. Make that make sense!

I think it’s a numbers and budgeting problem, I had 2 car payments, ($1600+$950) saved up to 25k in 4years have a wife and 3 sons on a single income and got a 300k house/ranch 6 years ago all on a 90k salary, so you can’t say it is not possible

it's the priorities. either you want a house or a new car note. it's hard to have both. I chose the house and to have a 27 year old truck. good credit us a plus. I didn't buy my house till I was 31.

I once was told my my friends parents that 50 % of one partners salary pays the mortgage so you can pay it off faster. I said sir, my whole salary pays the minimum payment on our mortgage and we live off the other. There is no paying it down faster, and we had very good jobs. Now it is even worse for new home buyers.

My immigrant (legal) parents. Both working as a cleaning crew for a Middle school bought a house in Chicago’s nice neighborhood, today that house is worth $650k. Im not sure if today they would be able to afford just taxes.
