In ch 7-8, Paul’s observing how both sin and the Spirit use the law & his own body. For him, he came to recognize he was greedy (covetous) even tho he wasn’t greedy after the specifics in the letter of the law. He wasn’t greedy after the specifics in the letter of the law but was greedy in a bunch of law-abiding ways nonetheless. For example, he didn’t outright steal but Pharisees (being lovers of money) found law-abiding ways to profit, whether it was taking someone to court, the money changing system (which was more of the Sadducees and Herodian’s thing), some Jews (tho likely not Pharisees) would rob pagan temples under the guise of idol-hatred. In either case, Paul realized that it’s bc the spirit of the law confronted him (he’s still greedy in letter-abiding ways) that the letter that once brought him comfort and promised life by obeying it is now being wielded by the spirit to say “uh huh, you’re actually condemned. Stop being greedy.” But he’s so accustomed to being lawfully greedy he finds this tension: even tho his conscience is pricked and he wants to do better, his body is in the habit of being greedy still. Sin (trying to get him off the hook) says “bro, you’re obeying what’s written already; you don’t have to take it THAT serious” using the law to excuse the higher calling of conscience. Sin excuses the law-abiding sinner USING the law (the specifics, the letter) while the Spirit uses the law to expose transgressors (the spirit behind the letter, the general notion of the command). So he finds the law is good but sin uses it to morph into plausibly deniable, law-abiding form. He wants to do better in his mind (agreeing with the Spirit’s calling higher) but is used to doing wrong with his body. He deems himself miserable and wretched - a walking contradiction. But Jesus is able to change him and make him not condemned by the LAW of the Spirit by sending his spirit into Paul giving him the power to “put to death the deeds of the body” (stop being greedy) that he may live and not be condemned.

I believe what Paul is saying is in our very nature we are sinful and can only rely on Jesus to deliver us from our sinful nature.

What I like about chapter 7 is that it feels raw and real, the struggles of a desperate man going through some battles. Relatable! But…then there’s chapter 8!

Chapter 6,7 and 8 flow together especially 7 into 8. Paul struggles with fleshly desires but the new Spirit of Christ inside him doesn’t want it. He is fighting the flesh while the Spirit of God is pulling him in a different direction. Go into chapter 8

TLDR, outside of Christ, the only way to be saved is by completely obeying the law (which is impossible because we’re sinners and born sinners). In that sense, the function of the law is to show us how holy God is and how sinful we are to the effect of showing us that it is impossible to be saved by “being moral” so to speak. Romans 8 is the answer to that conundrum.

First of all your openness is so refreshing. Second of all think of it like this just read this hope it connects the dots. Acts ch 10 Paul is praying and God sends him all these animals to eat but they were outside boundaries of what he was supposed to eat. Literally argues with God, anytime we have to start but God we are tripping. God tells him if He made it it’s good for us. Ok so if we are new creations transformed by will of God then things we used to want. Things we used to enjoy. Things we used to look forward to begin not to matter as much. We get more satisfaction, fulfillment, and pleasure by loving God. That’s the end goal, right Love God. Jesus tells us new commandment is to Love God and our neighbor like ourselves. If we busy with that sin is not even in equation. Hope that sums it up for you. For record that was definitely round about way of getting point across by Paul. Lol

we do have two natures after being saved. Your spirit man is regenerated or born again and it has been severed from the flesh and the law of God has been added to the nature of that new spirit. So it says in the first letter of John chapter 5 that anything born of God cannot sin. That is the state of your new spirit however your body has not been redeemed yet you'll find in the latter part of Romans eight that to be true. So what Paul was explaining in seven is that he wants to do good but winds up not doing the good he wants to do. The key versus the last two verses in chapter 7 and the first verse in chapter 8. So Paul is saying what are we gonna do I'm a wretched man because of this dual nature. And he answers his own question by saying thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. But that's not the end of the verse. Because when you finish that verse off you find it he says with my inner man I serve the law of God but with my flesh I serve the law sin. Now very important that you understand this next verse Romans 8.1 that says there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. That means you're declared not guilty. Sin is not imputed to your account because you have been crucified with Christ you have been buried with him in baptism and the law does not reach you into the grave. Which is why the word says consider yourselves dad but alive to Christ.
