People these days are all about the headline and the immediate picture they’ll never look at the numbers, if you showed them only getting porridge with a pinch of sugar or drizzle of honey nobody would mind. So many people pretending to care because thing costs money = grr my taxes, grr people on benefits etc

I remember kids from low income families getting free school meals, bus passes, help with uniforms and trips, while my family struggled because my dad worked. We got nothing. I was literally hungry at school.

I dont think its unreasonable for working famillies to dedicate £3-5 per day towards their child’s lunch (presuming they CAN afford that). Its already means tested. But I can see why the question is asked.

Of course it’s unfair because the threshold isn’t high enough. But even then, my wife grew up “middle class” in a £700,000 house. Never food in the cupboards, no money for lunch. Great that she basically starved though 👍

Differential :
If free school meals were provided to all state schools children it is estimated the wider benefit would be £1.71 to every £1 spent. 16 years of Austerity has set us on a very narrow path of under investment in our society and also a miseducation on fiscal policy for which we are seeing the effects of inequality, polarisation and mistrust.
