@dashanayshuler: Such a wonderful evening at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills for a special screening of OBSESSION, followed by a conversation with writer/director/editor Curry Barker and actress Inde Navarrette. I always love the opportunity to hear filmmakers talk about their work right after seeing the film. Suddenly, certain scenes and creative choices take on a completely different meaning when you hear the stories, ideas, and unexpected moments behind them. There was also a little surprise waiting on my seat — a One Wish Willow. 🌿 Still debating whether I should make a wish… or maybe not tempt fate. 😂 What stayed with me most, though, was the story of the film itself. Made for roughly $750,000, Obsession went on to gross more than $500 million worldwide — an extraordinary journey for a film that began on such a modest scale. There was no massive studio-sized production budget behind it. What it had was a strong concept, a distinctive voice, creative filmmaking, and ultimately an audience that embraced it. In a time when so much of the industry revolves around huge budgets, franchises, and established IP, it’s exciting to be reminded that an original independent film can still find its way into the cultural conversation. For emerging filmmakers especially, stories like this matter. You may not have unlimited resources or a giant machine behind you — but a compelling story, a clear point of view, persistence, and the courage to make something can still take you surprisingly far.
