@thequietescapefm: By 2005, 50 Cent was already one of the biggest names in hip-hop. The Massacre had debuted at No. 1 in the UK, but “Outta Control” was originally one of the album’s deeper cuts rather than an obvious blockbuster single. The original version eventually peaked at just No. 92 on the US Billboard Hot 100. (Official Charts) Then came the remix. 50 completely reworked the track and brought in Mobb Deep — Prodigy and Havoc — turning “Outta Control” into something much darker and more rooted in New York hip-hop. It was a particularly significant collaboration because Mobb Deep represented a very different side of the city from the commercially dominant G-Unit sound, while 50 was at the height of his mainstream power. The remix became the version that mattered. It reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 in the UK, while reaching No. 2 on the UK Hip Hop & R&B Singles Chart. (Official Charts) It also arrived during an important period for Mobb Deep. Their relationship with 50 Cent and G-Unit brought the Queensbridge duo to an even wider audience, and their presence gave the record a harder edge than the original. What makes “Outta Control” so memorable is how little it tries to do. The production is sparse, sinister and hypnotic, giving 50 and Mobb Deep plenty of room to deliver. It sounds unmistakably like mid-2000s New York — the point where underground East Coast rap and the commercial dominance of 50 Cent collided. And for anyone who remembers 2005, that remix was everywhere. #50Cent #throwback #GUnit #2000sHipHop #oldschool
