"Song Silent Collision Alone All" Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an American poet, author, memoirist, performer, educator, and civil-rights activist. Born Marguerite Johnson on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, she grew up in St. Louis and Stamps, Arkansas. Her life crossed literature, music, theatre, film, education, and activism. She worked with figures including Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the civil-rights movement. Her experiences of hardship, silence, racism, resilience, and identity deeply shaped her writing. Angelou became internationally known through I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969. Her writing repeatedly explored freedom, fear, dignity, survival, identity, and the strength of the human spirit. Her poem Caged Bird contrasts a free bird claiming the sky with a caged bird longing for freedom. That imagery makes her especially relevant to the idea of fearing the sky while trusting the ground. Her work often transformed personal struggles into broader truths about human life. Beyond literature, Angelou became a major cultural voice through poetry, autobiographies, film, education, and activism. She received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010 and more than 50 honorary degrees. Her poetry and autobiographical writing continue to be widely studied and read. She died in 2014 at the age of 86, leaving a legacy centered on courage, dignity, resilience, and the human spirit.
