He saw a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt swerve onto the wrong side of a tunnel. He tailed the car. Then he flipped on his emergency lights for a stop. The driver swung into an apartment lot and parked. Officer Benedict stepped out and met 20-year-old Trista Deal behind the wheel. He caught a heavy whiff of booze while talking to her. Other signs pointed to her being drunk. Trista owned up to drinks that night. She claimed she could still drive safely. But her passenger warned her not to. Signs of impairment led him to request field sobriety tests. Trista paused. At last, she said yes. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. No smooth eye pursuit. Jerky nystagmus at max turn. It started before 45 degrees. Vertical nystagmus too.
