Your dog is reactive to the doorbell or someone knocking on the door... but how reactive are YOU?⁣ ⁣ If you think about it, everything is calm in the house.⁣ ⁣ The doorbell 🔔 rings. (Stimulus)⁣ ⁣ Your dog immediately goes to arousal, charging the door and barking.⁣ ⁣ What we don't realize is that we've likely not only created this reaction in our dog, but we are reinforcing it by joining in the aroused and chaotic energy.⁣ ⁣ This starts with humans NOT teaching their dog to be calm when people come to the door. The dog gradually starts getting more and more aroused as time goes on.⁣ ⁣ On top of that, when the human comes home, they greet their dog everyday as they enter with excitement, petting, giving eye contact, and talking to that aroused state, which only further reinforces that:⁣ ⁣ When humans come to the front door, they don't want me calm. They want me to get crazy.⁣ ⁣ Then a guest comes to the house, and your dog goes nuts, like you taught them.⁣ ⁣ In an attempt to stop them, you get aroused, start yelling for them to calm down, give up, and open the door. Even more reinforcement.⁣ ⁣ So, as you see from the dogs perspective, things are calm, and someone is at the door, which means go nuts thanks to our daily repetitions when we come home. ⁣ ⁣ In addition, we bring even more excitement (arousal) in an attempt to stop them, which only confirms even further that people at the front door = go nuts.⁣ ⁣ I realize Nico is not going nuts in the video. He won't because of how I raised him, but I used his barking and then settled him as an example.⁣ ⁣ I will do a future video step by step on how to deal with this.⁣ ⁣ I don't mind dogs barking at the door but there has to be limits and we need to be calm and in control to tell them, thank you for alerting me, the leader will take over from here, so they can calm down.⁣ ⁣ If you want calmness, YOU must be calm. ⁣ ⁣ Love you.❤️
