😱 DID YOU KNOW A NIGERIAN POLITICIAN WAS SAID TO HAVE BARKED LIKE A DOG BEFORE HIS DEATH? The chilling story of Bode Thomas… More than 70 years later, one of the strangest stories in Nigerian history still refuses to disappear. His name was Chief Olabode Akanbi Thomas — a lawyer, politician, traditional chief and one of the most prominent Nigerian figures of the colonial era. Born in Lagos in October 1919, Thomas was a great-grandson of Alaafin Abiodun of Oyo. He studied at CMS Grammar School, later travelled to London to study law and was called to the Bar in 1942. He eventually became Nigeria's first Minister of Transportation and later served as Minister of Works. He was also a prominent figure in the Oyo political and traditional system. But it was his encounter with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II, that would turn his name into one of Nigeria's most chilling historical tales. ⚔️ THE CONFRONTATION On 22 November 1953, Bode Thomas reportedly entered an Oyo Divisional Council meeting where he was chairman. According to accounts, the other members stood as he arrived. The Alaafin did not. Thomas reportedly became angry and questioned why the king had remained seated. The Alaafin's response became legendary. He reportedly asked, in Yoruba: “Se emi lon gbó mọ́ báun?” — “Is it me you are barking at like that?” He then reportedly told Thomas: “Má gbó l’ọ́ báun.” — “Continue barking.” And then comes the part that has puzzled Nigerians for generations… 😳 WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? According to the story repeated in historical accounts, Bode Thomas returned home and began barking like a dog. The accounts say he continued throughout the night. By the early hours of 23 November 1953, Bode Thomas was dead. He was only about 34 years old. But here is where history meets legend: There is no reliable medical evidence establishing that a supernatural curse caused his death or that he literally barked himself to death. The “barking” story has survived through newspaper accounts, oral history and later retellings, becoming one of the most famous legends surrounding Nigeria's political history. So what really happened that night? A curse? A mysterious illness? A coincidence? Or a story that became larger with every generation that retold it? We may never know.
