@browneyedgurl801: It happened on May 2, 2021, on the Route 90 bridge in Ocean City, Maryland. A pickup hit a barrier and flipped onto the guardrail in a five-vehicle crash, and a little girl was thrown into Assawoman Bay, still strapped in her car seat. Jonathan Bauer, 51, told his 13-year-old daughter Ava to grab the first officer or firefighter she could find, and went over the railing. He dropped about 30 feet, swam to the girl, lifted her high onto his shoulder and patted her back until she brought up a lot of water and took a breath. A pontoon boat carrying Joe Oertel and his 14-year-old daughter pulled them both aboard and brought them ashore. The water at that spot is only four to five feet deep. The child was airlifted to a hospital and released the next day. Seven other people were taken to hospitals as well. Bauer, who at first did not want to be named, was later flown by the Air Force Thunderbirds before the Ocean City air show and received the Carnegie Medal, North America's highest honor for civilian heroism.
