@diabetesdoc: A man with type 1 diabetes died in ICE custody after saying he wasn't getting insulin. Diabetes doctor explains DKA symptoms and how fast it can happen without insulin. Cause of death still pending. #type1diabetes #DKA #diabetes #T1D #insulin
If I go 2-3 hours without insulin I get VERY sick. I can’t imagine days 🥺

I had a friend in highschool with T1D. His family always struggled to buy insulin. He said he was done, that he just didn’t want to do it anymore. He was dead less than a week later. The guilt of what it cost his family was just too great for him to live with. I think about him a lot. What kind of country is this that people literally just can’t afford to LIVE? 😔💔

I went into DKA when I was a teenager. I had not told my mom I was out of insulin because we were poor and couldn't afford it. I went 1 day without it. this case is awful. it's shameful.

I really want to go meet paramedics and explain T1 diabetes to them. I once was in dka and called 911 bc I could barely move or breathe. It was that bad. The paramedics tried to say I was just having anxiety despite my labored breathing. Since my blood sugar was in range they didn’t believe me. They treated me terribly, delayed help, and tried to talk me out of going to the hospital. I eventually got to the hospital, was dosed with fentanyl, and screamed at by doctors bc they estimated I had an hour before passing away. Those paramedics (especially the chief) truly neglected me, they kept complaining that their shift was almost over, and I think it was due to lack of knowledge. I had no help in the back of the ambulance; unfortunately one was a friend of a friend who told everyone before I was even admitted. How could I approach this in an appropriate way? I want them to be better for the next case they see. I have 14 years but the next person might not have the same knowledge and experience. I would hate to see them listen to the paramedics and pay the ultimate price

As a T1D of 45+ years... people do not understand that we live & work amongst them, managing our own literal LIFE SUPPORT every hour of every day, every day we stay alive. I would die in less than a week without access to my insulin and glucose monitoring equipment & supplies.

Ask someone who is diabetic this makes me so heartbroken. I know that if I miss my insulin, I literally feel like shit so I could only imagine how much this poor person suffered.

I hope they sue! I have heard of facilities NOT administering insulin to people detained. It was only a matter of time before this came to light

The issue for me is that we don't have any form of protection for financial related reasons when I was younger my mom literally couldn't afford insulin right after diagnosis because they wanted to charge almost 3k for my hospital stay and wanted to say our insurance didn't qualify do so it would cost almost 200 for insulin, the government needs to pass bills for Healthcare related to income if we can spend billions on wars and data centers we can do the same for our people 😑

I went a whole summer having t1d before we caught it in 2007. it was awful and I almost did not make it. it's a horrible way to go. and this was completely preventable. I hope the family sues and has the means to do so. this administration needs to be held accountable for the horrors they've put people through
