It’s because South Kerry had already lost a game to St kerians and a second defeat would have them knocked out but east Kerry got a bye and the rules are that every divisional team gets 2 games so since it was east Kerry’s first game that’s why they were safe

Few years ago when there were 8 senior clubs and 9 divisional teams , two divisional teams played off a prelim game to get into round of 16. Fast forward there’s now 10 clubs and 7 divisional teams (feale rangers and Shannon rangers joined to form north kerry and kenmare district are no longer in it since templenoe went senior). County board giving all divisional teams at least two games this year, thus why east kerry were through. Had east kerry won last night, one team would have got a bye in round of 16 (but EK could not get the bye)

I’m from Kerry and a massive football man but I barely even understand it lad those divisional teams are a pain the hole cork have a way better system with them too many of em dilute th quality of the championship and only about 2 of them have any hope of winning it

The whole structure is a farce in my mind, what's the need exactly to have two different championships and regional teams? Kerry should be one of the best and the football on display is still great, but the nonsensical structure puts me off.

Its a farce. The favourites east kerry get a bye in first round and then get a second chance when they lose in second round. Its an absolute joke
