it is skin color it was used against nilotic ppl bc they are some of the darkest people originally and some cushites (like oromo). now it’s used to other ethiopian semites and cushites who are darker. i’m saying this as a ethio semite who was called baricho as a nickname bc i was dark as a kid bc i was outside a lot and then had other friends also called that who were dark by their fam. if ur a lightskin habesha with afrocentric features (coiled hair, broad nose, etc which is actually quite common in ethio semites and cushites), they ain’t calling you bariya 💀 i’ve seen many habeshas with more afro centric features never called bariya many in my family even, while i did just simply of skin color as a “joke”
