TON 618 is a supermassive black hole located at the center of a very distant galaxy and powering a quasar. Its mass is estimated to be approximately 66 billion times that of the Sun, although more conservative estimates are around 40 billion. This mass gives it an incredible size: assuming it is non-rotating, its event horizon radius is approximately 1,300 astronomical units and its diameter is approximately 2,600 AU, or approximately 390 billion kilometers. For comparison, Neptune is approximately 30 AU from the Sun, so if TON 618 were in the Sun's position, its event horizon would extend approximately 43 times beyond the orbit of Neptune. It would take light approximately 15 days to cross its horizon from edge to edge. It's important to understand that the "size of a black hole" usually refers to the size of its event horizon, not any solid surface: within the horizon, spacetime is structured in such a way that nothing, not even light, can escape. TON 618 is so massive that even if it were replaced by a black hole with a mass tens of billions of times that of the Sun, it would still remain one of the most extreme known objects in the Universe. #blackhole #solarsystem #scarytok #facts
