T-72M2 Modera🇸🇰 | Edit | The T-72M2 Moderna is one of the most distinctive and ambitious modernization packages for the T-72M1 main battle tank. It was developed in Slovakia during the early 1990s by the defense company ZTS Dubnica nad Váhom following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Designed primarily for export and to upgrade the Slovak military's existing tank fleet, the project remained a conceptual prototype due to funding limitations. Key Features & Armament The tank's defining visual characteristic is its supplementary automatic armament mounted on the turret sides, intended to engage light armored vehicles, infantry, and low-flying aerial targets. * Main Armament: Standard 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun fed by an autoloader. * Secondary Armament (Signature Feature): * Early Variant (Moderna): Twin 20mm KAA-001 (Oerlikon) autocannons mounted on both sides of the turret, featuring independent elevation angles (-4° to +35°). * Later Variant (Moderna-2): The twin 20mm setup was later replaced by a single 30mm 2A42 autocannon (identical to the gun used on the BMP-2) on the right side of the turret to save weight and reduce mechanical complexity. * Fire Control System (FCS): Upgraded with the VEGA FCS (developed in cooperation with the Belgian company SABCA). It integrated a digital ballistic computer, updated environmental sensors, and thermal imaging for both the commander and gunner, drastically improving day/night engagement range and accuracy compared to the base T-72M1. Protection & Mobility * DYNA Explosive Reactive Armor: The hull and turret were fitted with Slovak DYNA (Dyna-72) ERA blocks. These offered improved resistance against both shaped-charge (HEAT) munitions and armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds. * Laser Warning System (LWS): Equipped with a receiver connected to smoke grenade launchers, enabling automatic deployment of smoke screens when targeted by laser rangefinders or anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). * Powerplant: The original 780 hp V-46-6 engine was replaced by a Polish S12U diesel engine producing 850 hp, paired with a modified transmission to maintain agility despite the weight increase to roughly 43.5 metric tons. Project Legacy Despite presenting competitive capabilities for its time—particularly in terms of fire control technology and secondary firepower—the T-72M2 Moderna never entered mass production due to lack of domestic procurement funds and fierce international competition in the 1990s T-72 upgrade market.
