If I do deposits of about 800k every 2 weeks on my mobile money, will URA question me about the source of the funds?

Yes, the problem with all these transactions exists pretty much everywhere in the world nowadays. The moment you digitally send someone a single cent, there seems to be a computer somewhere that wants to know exactly why you sent it, where it went, and preferably what you were thinking while doing it. 😂 That’s why cash is still so important to many people. In Europe, there are always discussions about restricting cash even further, so that as many transactions as possible can be tracked. At some point, I’m sure the bank won’t just know what you bought, but your toaster will also want to know why you bought three bread rolls that morning. 😂 In Uganda, a lot of things are still paid for in cash. Of course, there is a growing desire to use things like MoMo or Airtel Money at markets as well. It’s practical, but I think there is still a bit of a way to go before every market stall owner is pulling out a phone instead of counting cash. Let’s just hope that by then nobody has come up with the brilliant idea of getting rid of cash completely. 🙈🙈🙈

It’s absolutely okay for us to pay taxes we all have a responsibility to contribute to the development of our country. However, URA should also focus on promoting fair, transparent, and ethical taxation practices so that citizens and business owners understand why initiatives such as open banking and greater financial transparency are necessary. Business people should not be made to feel as though they are automatically suspected of wrongdoing simply because they are running businesses. Building trust, educating taxpayers, simplifying compliance, and treating businesses as partners in national development can encourage more people to comply voluntarily and confidently.
