My great-grandfather’s name was changed from Vito Andolini to Vito Corleone at Ellis Island. He came over on the Moshulu ship from Italy back in 1901.

How does so many families especially those of Italian descent have that story then. Like why is it being told. Was history being changed then or now?

I have found 5 different spellings of my grandmother’s maiden name. It wasn’t changed at Ellis Island, it was different on marriage and death certificate and even on draft cards.

Genealogist here...omg, if I had a dollar for everyone I have tried to explain this to, I would be a very wealthy woman. It's so frustrating when they refuse to believe it.

Another factor in names being changed during immigration is the mix of languages. Immigration by boat means people had to travel to port cities to leave for the US. My ancestors departed Europe from a country where they didn’t speak the language or even use the same alphabet so when someone is writing the ship’s manifest they’re just writing what they hear phonetically. It might not be correct

My paternal grandparents were illiterate. Their last name was so difficult to pronounce it was spelled multiple ways and eventually simplified significantly. A lot of immigrants also changed their names to be more Americanized.

Two different branches of my family have multiple spellings of the surname throughout the 1800’s, no Ellis Island involved.

My grandpa doesn’t know the true pronunciation of his last name. He said that his name was mispronounced when they came through Ellis Island because workers couldn’t pronounce foreign names. His family didn’t correct the mispronouncing bc they feared they wouldn’t be allowed into the USA. That moment forever changed his last name.
