@betterwithbiscuits: It doesn’t get much more classic than this homemade yellow cake with easy chocolate buttercream frosting! Y’all make one! #layercake #chocolatecake #chocolatebuttercream #dessert #fyp
For the cake batter:
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 stick (8Tbsp) salted butter, room temp
- 1/2 cup solid Crisco
- 5 large room temp eggs, separated
- 2 cups cake flour (I use Swans Down)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup room temp Buttermilk
- 2 tsp Vanilla
Cream butter, Crisco, and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes on high). Add in vanilla.
Separate eggs and add only the yolks to the batter and mix until combined.
Place whites in a bowl and beat STIFF (about 4 minutes). Reserve whites for later step.
Combine baking powder, baking soda, and salt with flour in separate bowl.
Alternate adding flour and buttermilk starting and ending with flour.
Once all ingredients are in bowl, mix on medium speed for 1-2 minutes.
FOLD IN egg whites.
Bake at 325 in three 9-inch round cake pans until done and edges start to come away from sides.
My oven takes 24 minutes but watch it in yours.
LET COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE FROSTING!
For the frosting:
- 1 1/2 sticks (12 Tbsp) softened butter
- 3/4 cup sifted unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1/2 cup Half and Half (or milk)
Cream butter and cocoa together until smooth. Add powdered sugar 2 cup at the time. Add vanilla. Let mix until well combined. Add liquid 1/4 cup at the time. You may not have to use it all. Just thin it out to a spreadable consistency.
Enjoy!
