America is getting a new historically Black medical school — and the timing matters. Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine in New Orleans has received preliminary accreditation, allowing it to begin recruiting its inaugural class of medical students for 2027. The school is a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health. It will be the only HBCU college of medicine in the Gulf South, expanding opportunities for future physicians and building on Xavier's legacy of preparing Black students for medical careers. The development comes as the U.S. faces a projected shortage of more than 141,000 physicians by 2038. Louisiana also faces significant healthcare access challenges, with 60 of its 64 parishes designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas. This is about more than opening a medical school. It's about who gets the opportunity to become a doctor, which communities receive care, and how we prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. But here's the bigger question: Is expanding medical education enough if underserved communities still struggle to access healthcare? Training more physicians matters. So do affordability, access, and making sure doctors can serve the communities that need them most. What impact do you think this new medical school could have?
