@design.for.battle: Bayard’s Revenge – Painting Guide There are some miniatures that are simply fun to paint, and then there are miniatures that tell an entire story before a brush has even touched them. Bayard’s Revenge definitely falls into the second category. This is our 3D resin interpretation of one of the most recognisable Black Templars scenes: a furious Emperor’s Champion standing over a fallen Ork, both hands wrapped around his enormous Black Sword as he delivers the final blow. It’s wonderfully excessive, unmistakably Warhammer, and packed with opportunities for painting. The photographs show the model straight from the 3D printer in its unpainted resin form, so we’ve created a painting concept showing how we would take it from grey resin to a finished display piece. With a miniature this busy, the trick is not allowing every detail to compete for attention. Armour, chains, weapons, cloth, leather, the Ork and the battlefield all need to work together, so a strong, restricted palette is important. For the Emperor’s Champion we’ve stayed with the classic Black Templars combination of black armour, warm ivory cloth, rich reds and restrained gold and brass details. Black armour can be surprisingly difficult. Rather than simply painting it black and highlighting with grey, keep the deepest recesses genuinely black and introduce cool blue-grey tones towards the exposed edges. Eshin Grey followed by controlled Dawnstone highlights works beautifully, with tiny touches of Administratum Grey on the sharpest corners. A few scratches and areas of battle damage help sell the story without overwhelming the armour. The flowing red ribbons provide the strongest colour contrast. Start with Khorne Red, shade towards deep burgundy and build through Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet, finishing with selective Wild Rider Red highlights. For the tabard, we’ve avoided brilliant white and instead used a warmer aged ivory. Zandri Dust provides a great starting point, followed by Ushabti Bone and Screaming Skull. Keeping brown shading in the folds gives the cloth much more depth. Gold begins with Retributor Armour, shaded with Reikland Fleshshade before progressively brighter highlights. Tiny touches of Stormhost Silver create the impression of polished edges catching the light. Then there’s the Ork. His skin provides a fantastic contrast against the Champion’s black armour. We’ve chosen a slightly desaturated military green, beginning around Death Guard Green and introducing warmer olive tones across the raised muscles. The face is particularly important: that enormous open mouth creates a natural secondary focal point, so deep shadows and dirty bone-coloured teeth really help bring it alive. His equipment should feel completely different from the disciplined armour of the Black Templar. The black-and-white chequered panels can be slightly irregular, with scratches, rust, exposed metal and chipped edges. Different metallic tones and corrosion effects make the weapon look assembled, repaired and repeatedly abused. The base is deliberately earthy and neutral: dark soil, broken stone, dusty browns and metallic wreckage. Starting dark and progressively drybrushing lighter stone colours allows all those complicated shapes to separate naturally. And finally, the blood. This is one miniature where a completely pristine finish would miss part of the story. Concentrate the strongest effects around the sword, the Ork and the ground immediately beneath him. Dark dried blood underneath smaller areas of brighter fresh red creates far more depth than covering everything in one glossy colour. That’s what makes Bayard’s Revenge such a fantastic miniature. It isn’t simply two figures sharing a base; it’s a complete piece of Warhammer artwork translated into three dimensions. The resin photographs show where the project begins.
