There’s nothing more comforting than a warm bowl of homemade Sri Lankan-style marrow bone soup. Rich, hearty and packed with deep flavour, this soup is slow cooked with aromatic spices until the marrow bones are tender and the broth becomes beautifully flavourful. I love adding mixed pulses and plenty of vegetables to make it extra hearty. You can use whatever vegetables you have at home, such as carrots, celery or potatoes, along with your choice of pulses. For a slightly richer and creamier finish, some people like to stir in a little coconut milk towards the end. Serve it piping hot with Sri Lankan roast paan or roast bread for the perfect comforting meal. It’s simple, nourishing and full of homemade goodness, and every spoonful is so satisfying. Ingredients 1 kg marrow bones, beef or mutton 2 tbsp oil 5–6 garlic cloves 5–6 shallots or a small onion A small piece of ginger A few curry leaves 2 tbsp black peppercorns 1 tbsp cumin seeds 2 green chillies, optional 1 small piece of cinnamon stick 3–4 cardamom pods 1 large onion, sliced 1 large tomato, chopped ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tbsp salt 1–2 cups vegetables of your choice ½ cup mixed pulses Water, as needed Method Crush the garlic, shallots or onion, ginger, curry leaves, black peppercorns and cumin seeds together. If you like, add the green chillies as well. Set aside. Heat the oil in a large pot. Add the crushed mixture, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods and sliced onion. Sauté until the onion softens and everything becomes fragrant. Add the chopped tomato and marrow bones. Add the turmeric and salt, then add water as needed. Cover and cook on low heat for about 3 hours, or pressure cook until the marrow bones are well cooked and tender. Once the marrow bones are cooked, add 1–2 cups of your choice of vegetables and ½ cup of mixed pulses. Continue cooking until the vegetables and pulses are fully cooked. Serve hot and enjoy. If you have any doubts, drop them in the comments I’ll reply to all of you ❤️ If there’s any recipe you’d like to see next, let me know as well I’d love to make it for you Follow for more delicious recipes! #soup #srilankanfood #srilankan #collagen #bonebroth
