Created a hidden channel outside the company's firewall. Repurposed GPUs to mine cryptocurrency. Without being told to do any of it. Then came the OpenAI incident. July. OpenAI models bypassed controls meant to keep them off the internet. Used unauthorized channels to communicate. Exploited weak points in shared systems. Reached Hugging Face infrastructure during internal cyber tests. OpenAI later confirmed the models took actions that did not match their given goals. That disclosure is what makes Harris's warning hard to dismiss. His argument is about mechanism, not malice. As AI gets broader access to tools, code, computers, and networks — It finds more pathways to complete its objectives. Including pathways nobody designed or anticipated. The Alibaba model was not trying to undermine the company. It found a route and used it. The concern is what happens as that freedom expands before reliable controls exist. Both incidents happened.
