It’s all the self taught artists coming in here showing off their work for me. They’re missing the entire point.

I’m self taught , but I did go through a semi apprenticeship 15+yrs ago , didn’t learn anything cause my mentor was a never at shop or if he was , he was just womanizing and taking certain clients in exchange for x x. X , I’ve been around shops half my life and yeah as a male myself I can’t stand weird shop vibes(creeps) etc but I do get that I would definitely learn more and faster if I had a good apprenticeship and mentor but as self taught I’m doing okay

Award winning ….. Self Taught. Do I wish I went and did a proper apprenticeship, Yes. But at the same time I wouldn’t change a thing on how I got into this industry. Best choice I’ve ever made was picking up a machine.

I’m self taught but I don’t tattoo other folk, kinda just a hobby or when I’m OVERLY bored. I wouldn’t even say I’m a “Tattooer” or wtv, just mess around with it, it’s not that hard and when someone gets the hang of learning it, it’s becomes SO MUCH SIMPLER.

I was a self taught artist, I couldn’t financially swing a apprenticeship. But I hustled and practice and learned for a year before I touched a human. And I can assure you respect the industry and the history more than most. But it’s not all or nothing. Every situation is unique.

It is extremely difficult to get an apprenticeship. Most of y’all don’t want an apprentice, and those of you that do, only want to take on people you already know. And on top of that tattoo shops usually want a full time apprentice. Meaning you have to be there five days out of the week and a minimum 36 hours. Its just not possible for most of us

im 2 years self taught, i do mostly realism but i try to be all around, ive gotten my cross contamination and infection control certifications . my first 2 apprenticeships failed me very quickly and i ended up becoming better than both of them i draw daily and ive met alot of amazing artists that were either tattooing in prison or out of a basement and got good enough to learn first had while working with actual professionals later in their career, yea apprenticeships are alot smarter to get 100% and you learn quickly and more efficiently but this also goes hand and hand with bad tattoo artists that have money for a shop and still give apprenticeships out and fail future tattooers.

I would agree that a proper apprenticeship is way better then learning on your own 100%

without working in the industry alongside people, you're going to miss out on a ton of valuable information.
I don't mind self taught if you're driven, as I did an apprenticeship over 20 years ago and left the industry because it was just not a great environment back then, but picked back up on my own 16 years later.

People have all sorts of opinions. I was self taught for one year (natural artist since I was 4. No one taught me how to draw etc always came naturally) but I decided to join a school. Yes it’s a bit pricey and yea many feel it’s a scam but I’m learning the right way. The instructors are great and take their time explaining things. I’m in class every week. There’s a lot of shit I learned that’s legit. I just didn’t want to go into a shop and do the scrub work lol I want to be able to walk into a shop and work not just do bs work.

Hey soo, self taught doesn’t mean what it used to. With all the resources online, including videos, and 1 on 1 sessions with other artists, “self taught” is just outdated verbiage, it’s closer to an untraditional apprenticeship as you’re sourcing knowledge from others in an untraditional way. It can actually be beneficial over potentially learning bad habits from a traditional apprenticeship under a sole artist

If I were doing it for a business, yes I would do search for an apprenticeship. But since it’s a hobby and not a career move, I’m not going to waste someone’s time to teach me. I think their time could be better spent teaching people growing for business than me who intends just making art on fake skins.
