A humanoid robot clears one obstacle, then loses balance and crashes into the next barrier. This clip from the World Humanoid Robot Games shows how hard dynamic locomotion still is. The robot has to control foot placement, body pitch, momentum and recovery while moving through a course that gives it almost no room for error. A small timing mistake at the ankle, knee or hip can turn into a full-body fall in a fraction of a second. I kept replaying the moment before the fall. The robot is still moving forward, but its upper body starts drifting before the next step lands. Once that balance error builds up, there is very little time left to recover. These events are useful because they show more than a clean walking sequence. You see acceleration, obstacle clearance, recovery attempts and failure in front of a crowd.
