As females we're taught "they pick on you because they like you" "they pull your hair because they like you" they push you...chase you...bully you...berate you...follow you... because they like you. From childhood boys use violence towards girls as play. They see us as nothing but "things" for their enjoyment. Not all men. But 1 is too many.

When I was pregnant with my precious son I had some serious gender disappointment, and people thought I was horrible and shallow for feeling that way. It wasn’t the lack of bows or cutesy outfits that made my stomach drop. It was knowing I have been tasked with raising a son in this some how normalized patriarchy.

For me it's sitting down with my teenage son and explaining how if he's ever in a group chat or a party where this sort of thing is happening or being discussed or even hinted at, he is to treat it like a 5 alarm fire. And just like with fire safety, we're going to make a plan of action. Because if you don't know what to do ahead of time there's a chance you'll freeze up and won't do anything and that's 100% not acceptable. Not participating isn't good enough. You burn every bridge you have to to MAKE IT STOP.
