By 1977, getting onto a stage was no longer easy for Elvis Presley. His health had deteriorated, exhaustion followed him from city to city, and prescription medications had become a serious part of his troubled final years. Yet when the lights came on and the band began to play, Elvis still walked out. He had spent more than twenty years learning how to perform for people, but almost no time learning how to stop. There were practical reasons to keep touring. Elvis carried professional commitments and financially supported many people around him. But money alone does not explain everything. The stage was one of the few places where he could still feel the immediate connection that had defined his life since the 1950s. Elvis once admitted that even after becoming famous, “I’ve never gotten over what they call stage fright. I go through it every show.” He still cared deeply about whether the audience accepted what he gave them. That is what makes his June 21, 1977 performance of “Unchained Melody” in Rapid City so powerful. Sitting at the piano, Elvis was visibly far from the young performer America first discovered. Charlie Hodge stood beside him holding the microphone while Elvis played and sang. For those few minutes, however, the physical struggle and the music existed together. He was not perfect, but he was still reaching for the song. Watching that footage today, it is tempting to see only the ending. But Elvis did not walk onto those stages believing each concert was a farewell. Another tour was scheduled for August. He thought there would be another crowd, another curtain opening, another chance to sing. That may be the most painful part: his body was running out of strength before Elvis himself was ready to stop. #elvispresleyfans #everyone #foryou #elvispresley #
